For our sea-going, pre-emptive salvaging friends. Hand turned Purpleheart wood with brass eye and split ring; 2 1/2" x 1 1/2". Belayng pins are used as a quick release on sailing ships to temporarily tie off ropes. (see picture) Purpleheart, when freshly cut, is a lavender tan which gradually deepens to a rich royal purple when exposed to gentle heat and sunlight. It is a dense, slightly open grained wood which takes a high gloss polish. It is found in central and south America. Finished with museum quality archival wax. Although belaying pins must be built to a certain basic form, each one has slightly different designs.
